A clean environment is considered to be a basic requirement for human health and is included by the United Nations as one of the Sustainable Development Goals, in particular SDG 11 (UN, 2015). However, pollution in the environment continues to pose a significant threat to well-being and is a critical issue the world over.

Scientific findings indicate urgent need to undertake pre-emptive action as a panacea to control this gigantic problem.
