English is a global language. It is the most widely spoken language in the world and the lingua franca in many countries. It is the language of science, technology, education, commerce, trade, medicine, aviation, and so on. No one can deny its importance in the contemporary times. It acts as a link language among people from different cultural backgrounds. It has become a necessity today and a fairly high degree of proficiency in the English language and excellent communication skills enhance the employment prospects of a person.
The teachers of the Department of English teach communication skills through the Ability Enhancement Compulsory Course (AECC) – English Communication paper prescribed in the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) – to strengthen their English language skills. The teachers fulfil the objectives of the paper by developing the four basic skills of language – listening, speaking, reading and writing – by exposing the students to literary texts, thereby sensitizing them to literature and help them to give vent to their creative expressions by engaging them with some real life issues of the present times. The Department also offers the optional Generic Elective papers which are based on English literature.
Apart from teaching the prescribed papers, the teachers of the Department play a major role in the overall personality development of the students, actively prepare them for various intra and inter-college debate and declamation competitions and groom them for their professional life.
